  34.      Gemfibrozil capsules should be stored at room temperature in a tightly
  35. closed container.

  37. USES
  38.  
  39.      Gemfibrozil is used to treat hyperlipidemia (high blood fat levels) in
  40. patients who have not responded to diet, weight reduction, exercise, and
  41. control of blood sugar.  It is not clear how gemfibrozil lowers blood lipid
  42. levels, but it is thought to decrease the body's production of certain fats.

  44. TREATMENT
  45.  
  46.      In order to maximize its effectiveness, gemfibrozil should be taken 30
  47. minutes before meals.
  48.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  49. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  50. take the missed dose; just return to your regular schedule.  Do not double the
  51. dose.

  53. SIDE EFFECTS
  54.  
  55.      Minor.
  56.  
  57.      Constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, gas, headache, insomnia,
  58. loss of appetite, nausea, and stomach upset.  These side effects should
  59. disappear in several days, as your body adjusts to the medication.
  60.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (bran,
  61. salads, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  62. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  63.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down awhile; get up slowly, and be careful
  64. on stairs.
  65.      To help relieve mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips.

  69.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  70. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  71. back pain, blurred vision, fatigue, muscle cramps, rash, swollen or painful
  72. joints, tingling sensations, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  74. INTERACTIONS
  75.  
  76.      Gemfibrozil can increase the effects of oral anticoagulants (blood
  77. thinners, such as warfarin), which can lead to bleeding complications.  BE
  78. SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you are already taking a medication of this type.

  80. WARNINGS
  81.  
  82.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  83. any medications, especially to gemfibrozil.
  84.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  85. you now have, or if you have ever had, biliary disorders; gallstones or
  86. gallbladder disease; kidney disease; or liver disease.
  87.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or blurs your vision, do not take part in
  88. activities that require alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  89. potentially dangerous equipment.
  90.      * Do not stop taking this medication unless you first check with your
  91. doctor.  Stopping the drug abruptly may lead to a rapid increase in blood
  92. lipid (fats) and cholesterol levels.  Your doctor may therefore want to start
  93. you on a special diet or another medication when gemfibrozil is discontinued.
  94.      * Large doses of gemfibrozil administered to animals for prolonged
  95. periods of time have been associated with benign and malignant cancers.  This
  96. association has not been observed in humans.
  97.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although gemfibrozil
  98. appears to be safe during pregnancy, extensive studies in humans have not yet
  99. been completed.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.
  100. It is not known whether or not gemfibrozil passes into breast milk.
